Gamepad + Keyboard shortcut software?

I have a nes usb controller I want to hook up to my laptop. I don't think windows10 (or i haven't found it yet) will let me assign keyboard short cuts to the gamepad buttons.

is it in there somewhere?

If I need 3rd party software anyone have any with good luck? I've read that some are resource hog. Trying to avoid trying a lot of different software as this is the machine that runs my cnc table. It doesn't even go on the internet very often at all. because it's a slow ass amd shitbox and because I can't risk it getting fucked up

It should work plug and play for some things. Otherwise xpadder and joytokey

Joy2key is what I use for various things, I've also used xpadder for an xbox controller. Either one of them will get you what you need.

It works but i need to assign it keyboard short cut keys and that I didn't see an option for at all.

Do those need to be open or is it something that can run in the background?
i did use something for my mac but then program had to be opened each time. Kind of an annoyance

I'll have to reboot it and see it it works or if i have to add the program to the startup file. But only took 5 minutes to setup
