There are just too many things that could go wrong on a boat and weather can change way too damn fast out there.

For example:

Spring of 2011 my Grandpa and I were bringing his 36' Carver Cabin Cruiser out from the Cal-Sag (Dry docked in Burnham for the winter) back to Burham Harbor. Right as we were exiting the Cal onto the lake I noticed that the steering wheel was dripping fluid, and about 2 minutes later we lost steering. Luckily, we had the rudders straight when the hydrolics line blew. We simply used the twin screws to steer the 36 foot boat all the way down the Cal-Sag past the locks (a ~5 mile trip I'd estimate?). Single screw and we would have been getting towed.

Also, a Boat U.S. membership has the potential to save you a shitload of money if you ever need a tow.

I believe it's somewhere in the 7 mile range. I read it almost every time I'm in the locks but always forget it. Ha.

I have to work with what I can afford for a boat, and afford to run it as well. A single engine is probably going to be the best place to start in a power boat. A cruiser would be a different story, but I just need to get this fast boat bug out of my system first. I have enough money to put down on the boat where I wont be upside down on the loan if I decide to get rid of it.

80% of my predicted use is going to be floating around, 10% out hot dogging it, and 10% on the trailer needing to be fixed or maintained. I have no desire to be running 30 miles offshore, 2 miles is plenty far to be away from any real boat traffic on lake michigan.

Im wanting to be as realistic as possible with this and not get in over my head.

i love my jetski, but id take a boat over a ski if i had a place to keep it and could afford to run the thing. maintenance on a newer fuel injected jetski is next to nothing. both last year and this year i changed the oil and lubed the few points on the steering linkage and trailer. a whole $50 a year expense, plus insurance (which is $180 for the year). i also get great "fuel mileage" if im not hammering it the whole time. a typical day on the water i'll spend $25-$30 on fuel.

buying the boat is the "cheap". running, maintaining/fixing, and storing it gets expensive. try to get a fuel injected boat though. dicking around with carb issues on the water ruins the day really quick

definitely will be fuel injected. going to look at that velocity tomorrow....
-free place to store it indoors all year, though i will try and keep it in the water for the season next year.
-Im more than capable of doing anything that could be needed to the boat maintenance or repair wise.

about as prepared as i can be for owning a boat right now i think.

i dont doubt it, and i drool every time you post another boat on facebook.
my biggest issue is a place to keep it. i have no space for it at my condo, and my parents would probably kill me if i asked them to keep a boat at their house (my jetski is already parked there).
do you plan to rent a spot in a marina?

A guy i work with has a 40x60 shop at his house. He moved out and lives with his GF at her place, the shop is unused and he offered it up to me for free. Full shop in the place, a hoist tall enough to pull a boat motor, the works.

I'll probably start with having the boat on a mooring can in one of the chicago harbors next season. An actual walk up slip is just shy of $4k/season with all the taxes and everything. We'll see how tired i get of rowing out to my boat haha

fuck. the marina has this boat too: 2001 Velocity 280 Performance

good (the 26' has none of these options):
bigger boat
i like the color scheme better
k planes
hydraulic steering
bimini top
gps speedo
switchable exhuast
ship to shore radio
deck hatches
its gonna be reaaaaal fast. prob an 80+mph boat
better stereo

bad:
aftermarket motor
its carbed, and im not terribly knowledgeable on tuning
hull has higher hours on it
interior is ugly as fuck
2yrs older
$1000 more (this is pretty damn negligible)
probably takes premium gas only (again not a huge deal, maybe a few hundred difference in fuel costs vs every year)

not even going to try and fuck with a supercharged motor on a boat. I dont have the cash to buy the thing either with enough left over to buy a drive too. It needs to be a running boat.

I like those Velocity boats, but from a family perspective there is not a lot of outside passenger space. Single guy and friends it is perfect.

guys on OSO are reporting 68mph-72mph depending upon conditions

There is just a very very limited selection of boats that are not bow riders, cruisers or powerboats for a decent price and not used the hell out of. Im just not seeing them out there.

I dont need a million people on my boat, but there is enough room for 7 realistically to ride. the engine hatch, bow and an island are plenty of space to spread out once anchored up
