I see people do all types of shit to keep sea gulls off their boats, piers, and swim platforms...nothing seems to work. They are some tough birds too, I have shot several in the head with a bb gun back in the day the fuckers would just bounce off and they would fly away. Started shooting in the chest, problem solved.

I took off this friday to hopefully get a couple days of boating in this weekend. Im thinking this is about it for the season.

Tuesdays are my off day from the gym and typically the only time during the week I get a chance to do anything. I installed my drive shower earlier, decided to check the trailer tire pressures and have a look at the grease levels in my bearing buddies. Ended up finding one of the bearings shot. Replaced the drum/hub/bearings/studs on one axle, caught a brake line about to split open, and a crack in my engine hatch that was now leaking stale ass water inside of my engine compartment on top of my bro island.

When are you guys putting your boats away for the year? I just lost my free indoor storage spot and need to find something right-quick.

Mine is a closed cooling system so really not a whole ton of stuff to do. Its got that nifty quick drain system on it. Hook up the little bike pump and pump it a few times, boom water out of the motor. Some stabilizer in the tank and change all the fluids, call it good.

cool ive never really done anything with closed cooling but its not really that bad to winterize one without it, i just drain the manifolds and pull the coolant hoses off and fill her up with anti freeze, change oil, fog it and call it good, i might put it up for sale soon tho to start another boat project

KJ's place is offering some dirt cheap indoor heated storage. I think it was only $400 for the whole winter. My granpa pays a few thousand for outdoor storage, although he has a 36ft cabin cruiser...

Replaced that brake line last night. ouch. Im going to need to replace all the lines unfortunately. I started bleeding that one wheel cylinder and the fluid is coming out rusty as fuck. Pumped a whole quart through it.

Did i even mention how much it sucks bleeding surge brakes? fuck me!

Jared as far as winter storage...

My dad asked me today when I wanted to take the boat out of the water. It has to come out before Oct 15th or else the harbor makes you pay more money. The lakes getting pretty rough so it might be in our best interest to get it out and get it over with. We take ours down the Calumet to a marina on the Southside. The previous owner has had this place maintain and store our boat since new. Its a few thousand to get it taken out of the water, winterized, shrink wrapped, and winter storage. My dad has been shopping around and they are very reasonable.

Marine Services Corp - Dolton, IL

When we had smaller boats they got stored inside at Chucks Storage in Genoa City Wisconsin. We have been using him for boats, sleds, and cars, for like 15 years. I am not sure how much to store a boat and trailer, but its only like $160 to store a 2 place enclosed snowmobile trailer for the summer. Its a bit of a drive, but worth the savings. Very nice place, and Chuck is a nice guy.

So we had to reinstall one of the hydraulic pumps on our boat at work. We went out and tested how it works, here's our E-Stop (brand new turbo so we weren't allowed to go full speed, this is only 35kts).

I assume it's just a hydraulic tab that drags in the water, much like a flap on an airplane

I think some of the larger patrol boats have jet drives instead of outboards. Judging by the mention of turbos and the fact that in the video the boat appears to be one of the larger RIB's, I'm guessing it is a jet-drive model. That now opens up the possibility for it to have a reverse system/brake system just like a newer waverunner. A "chute" drops down over the thrust exit nozzle and directs the thrust towards the bow.

I'm stationed in Miami Beach. We were just above Dodge Island. The road right above Dodge Island is MacArthur Causeway. We are on the east island on MacArthur, right before you go into Miami Beach.

We don't put Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats into service anymore. Some older units have them, but they're getting phased out. We were on a Response Boat - Medium (RBM):

It has two jet drives along with a trim tab, which we call an "interceptor tab" (no idea why).

This system is simple, we just took all the water we used to push ourselves forward and redirected it to the front of the boat.

We had a problem with the air intake gaskets on that boat. It couldn't make full power in the video. We replaced the gaskets on Thursday and Friday was busy as hell. On Monday we'll take the boat for a full power trial and see how it stands up to abuse. Stand by for some fun J-Turn videos.

Fucking Coast Guard and their color vision requirements. High 90's on my ASVAB and they offered me like a damn cook or something. I tried my ass off to the Maritime Police (MSP?) or Intel.

Looks fun, I'm just jealous.

ME is maritime law enforcement, PS is port security (which is for reservists only)

ME sucks. I'm a Machinery Technician and I get to do all the fun stuff that an ME does also. But if you'd rather count bullets and order holsters instead of learning how to repair $70,000 engines then go ME.

Here are the J-Turns from the same day. The steering wasn't properly calibrated so they weren't as aggressive as they should have been. The first two were pretty lame, the second two were a little better.

Nothing like doing a complete U turn at 40mph in a 20ft radius.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCCtC9c90

This is just what I recorded for fun. Also, when operating properly, this boat is a lot more capable.
