i do this every day at work. when splicing two loose ends together make sure you dont twist each end before you put them together. take both ends that are straight wires and cross them at the half way point and then twist them together. this makes for a more even distribution of solder. when preparing to solder heat the wire and toutch the solder to the wire. dont melt the solder to the gun and then try and apply it. other than that not much to it. make sure you tape using UL approved electrical tape and make sure not to have strands of wire poking through the tape!! Happy Soldering!!

While tape may be great for some situations, do a professional job and save yourself the later headaches that even the best electrical tape can cause with exposure to the elements and age, it will eventually unravel - and its never water tight(if at all), for very long........

Get some good quality heat shrink...and for automotive applications, you can't get it at Radio Shack. Most dealerships have a kit the local nut/bolt supplier fills regularly, or go to a "REAL" electrical supply house, or industrial supply like Grainger, MSC, etc. Get the stuff with the waxy core that melts out around the heatshrink to seal it.

That's what Ford specifies for the replacement pigtails for nearly everything under the hood anymore.

Here's a great FAQ for soldering:
