I keep seeing all these other R/C threads. We should have a whole thread dedicated to anything/everything we do R/C.. and if not, at least post in it here and there. Maybe if we're nice to Mook, we could get a sub forum for it?
For some reason the other night, I had the urge to get my wheely king out of my closet for the first time since July or so.. I have the crawler conversion on it and the custom 3-link suspension that comes with it honestly leaves a lot to be desired. The ball joints that screw on to each end of the 4 swing arms (8 total) are kinda shitty plastic and they like to tear threads if you hit something. You can see them in this picture at each end of the dark gray swingarms on the bottom.
Long story short, I replaced the ball joint / end assemblies last night and there's a piece that goes between each in the frame that's made of plastic. both of them stripped on me while I was reassembling it. Luckily, I was already at a hobby shop when I was throwing these parts on.. so I bought some aluminum stock to replace these.
Tonight I ended up cutting, lathing and tapping alloy replacements for more strength. Didn't think about it and went with the stock size. The new arm ends/ball joints are about 1 millimeter narrower than the stocks on either side of the ball and there was a pretty big discrepancy in the sizes, so I need to make new ones tomorrow.
Old vs. New. Looked good before I screwed it together..also decided I might as well go with a finer thread while I'm at it for more "bite" just in case.
And here's how short I ended up coming.
Need to make up quite a bit for it to even up on either side. I'm guessing about 4.5-5MM longer and I'll be good. Can't wait to get this truck going again. Contemplating getting a waterproof brushless motor/esc and waterproof reciever box setup for this bad bitch.
