One of two choices:

2018 Kia Stinger GT

Or Id take the 2017 MKZ

Both fast but great DDs from what I hear at least.

Hell no. There are some days I'll drive somewhere and sit in the backseat with my laptop to work. This would be magical. I could get a massage as I'm working.

like... an awd tbss still has a transfer case... yukon denali, awd, has a transfer case.

i think you need to add "shiftable"? to get where you're trying to get at?

i almost think for the purpose of this thread, defining "awd" should be something that cannot be shifted by the driver into "just" rwd or fwd.

Agreed. A car that gives you the feel of an RWD car with it stepping in and automatically engaging AWD as needed doesn't sound like a bad idea. Although I really don't have anything to compare it to, I think my X Drive does a pretty good job of doing just that. But this isn't my thread.

This thread is pretty vague as you can pick a 911 turbo where you are lucky to pack a weekend bag for you and your lady, or dude if that is your thing. Or are we talking one vehicle that does it all?

If you would DD a 911 turbo and its in your budget then yes pick it.

Something tells me no one that can afford a 911 a turbo here would DD it. Obvious exceptions can be made there. I believe Jeremy Cliff DDs an older 911?

So I don't see it as vague, more of open ended.

But since TCG has to pick literally everything apart and can't just have fun with a thread they post 4wd vehicles, then debate what that is, then post shit they totally would never DD or even better couldn't afford.... or my personal favorite they don't even post a car, just a brand or a motor....

People her constantly rip on Jalopnik but this place acts just like it when I post one of these just as Jalopnik does.

Just trying to generate duckets here so mook can feed himself this weekend.

Yes, everything that is awd is 4wd is awd is 4wd. Thats my answer from now on because there will never be a consensus without posting 17 rules and that takes the fun out of making threads.

Should have just gone with 4wd/awd as I was gonna do but wanted to take the trucks/suvs out and see what cars/wagons/etc that people would drive.

One of these days I'll learn to stop posting! I'm a glutton for punishment

I think we all just have very different versions of what awd vs 4x4 is.

to me 4x4 is shiftable to 2x4 by the driver...

having a transfer case does not designate awd or 4x4 either, because a transfer case can do either.

some fun threads on the land cruiser drivetrain. pretty interesting.

And to me that means the Land Cruiser has 4wd:

And yes, there is no clear definition of 4wd... and the manufacturers have really muttled it up. My Montero has A4WD per the sticker on the liftgate.

Hummer I

Full-time all wheel drive.

Transfer case: All HUMMERs use a New Process Gear (NPG) 242 2sp transfer case. It is a full time transfer case incorporating an open differential between the front and rear driveshafts (DS). It has 4 modes, High (H), High Locked (HL), Low (locked) (L), and Neutral (N). The ratios are 1:1 in high, 2.72:1 low.

Military versions have a 50/50 split, civil versions a 48/52 split via the planetary gear differential. Military TC has a mechanical speedometer output and a larger oil cooling loop.

The input shaft and rear output shaft are co-linear. The front is a left handed output, chain driven. In H, the normal operating position, torque is evenly split front and rear via the transfer case's differential. This center differential is open and allows the front and rear driveshafts to turn at different rates to allow turning on high traction surfaces. In HL, the differential is locked (manual locker), forcing the front are rear driveshafts to turn at the same rate. This is equivalent to a part-time 4wd system. The L position forces the input shaft to turn a planetary gear assembly at the front of the case. The ring gear is machined into the front case. Low adds a gear reduction of 2.72:1. The differential is always locked in low. The N position disconnects the input from the output shafts totally. The differential is open in this position. A sensor at the rear of the transfer case (TC) is used to determine speed. Another sensor determines if the TC differential is locked or unlocked, illuminating a status light. The TC is cooled via transmission fluid flowing through an intercooler inside the TC. The engine, transmission, and transfer case are rigidly connected together. The assembly is canted slightly to the right.

Differentials: The differential case is a Dana (AMC) 20, hypoid (top entry), same as in some older Jeeps (AFAIR). The differential has a ratio of 2.73:1. HUMMERs use Zexel-Gleason Torsen torque sensing/biasing (front and rear) differentials. These are not a limited slip design or locking design. The bias ratio is 3.8:1 AFAIK. Since the suspension is independent, the differential case is connected to the frame.

Optional Eaton ELocker locking differentials front and rear.

like to me, that suburban i posted, has an AWD system found in GMT800 denali's. it is not selectable to be 2x4 or 4x4. also with this, it does not bind when turning on dry pavement. like a 4x4 vehicle would.

The burb probably is, I didn't click the link or say it was 4wd... I assumed, like you just said, it was like a denali and does have a non selectable awd system.
