Throwing around the idea of a project car/toy. I am not married to a brand or anything, but I do have some requirements. Help me think outside the box.
/
Thinking cheap, buy-in of $1500 or less (more for mods as it progresses)
FWD, RWD, AWD, doesn't matter.
V8 or turbo anything (or something to swap a V8 and/or turbo into)
Manual transmission stock (don't really want to mess around with swapping one in)
Ability to be a decent auto-x vehicle (no 3/4+ trucks)

Current thoughts/ideas...

3rd gen F-Body - do some H/C right away, and maybe an LS swap down the line?
Fox-body - LX, Cobra IRS, if V8 H/C, if 2.3 I4 SVO/Turbo Coupe swap, possibly a 3.5 EB and 6-speed manual conversion down the line? Or a Coyote?
Ranger - Similar to the Fox-body in possible mods
SVT Focus/Contour - strip it, drop it, throw it around turns

Any other ideas?

If you're looking for a car with an IRS in it you're going to be way north of $1500. A clean 03-04 IRS alone is around $1,200 plus another $1,500'ish for the bushings and suspension... Ask me how I know.

Unless you're looking just for a roller car for $1500, and then you'll start buying all that stuff?

Roller car, preferably running to start, and mods to come later.

What do you mean by auto-x? like around cones or the track?

Yes. depending on the car really. Probably would start off with cones and if the car is capable, then to a track, but that would be way down the line.

Your cheapest choice on that list for doing that and having it be somewhat competitive is the Focus SVT. RedBeard can weigh in here but they can be had for cheap. Just doesn't seem to fit all the others which are v8 rwd american cars. Not that you can't race those but it requires a bit more money/work to make them reliable.

I'm really open to whatever. Don't really care about FWD vs. RWD, V8, V6, I4, whatever. Motors can be swapped, turbo's can be popped in.

What I really want is something to wrench on and throw around an auto-x course, and drive on occasion to satisfy my manual itch. I mentioned the Fox and F-body because they can be cheap and plentiful, and parts can be cheap and plentiful.

The SVT Focus has always been on my radar and have been close to pulling the trigger on a couple through the years, just never worked out.

I'm not looking for something that is perfect, or even close to clean. Preferably fairly rust free, but that's about it. Issues are not a huge concern, as I'd be working through a lot of it anyways.

Around here you won't find anything for $1500 that isn't a piece of shit underneath. Maybe the body might not be rusted, but you'll end up setting it on fire trying to get it apart or work on it.

Save your money until you have enough money to buy something nice, and then buy something nice. Don't rush and buy some piece of shit that won't pass tech.

I have the money to buy something "nice" and would adjust my range if necessary. But then again, it depends on the vehicle...My parents live in Florida, and I could theoretically, haul/drive something from down there as well, that would likely be rust free(er). Again depends on the vehicle.

I guess what I'm saying is the price isn't firm. I've seen all of the cars I've listed in the range, and obviously wouldn't buy complete junk, but a semi straight vehicle that needs some (or a lot) of TLC isn't going to scare me off.

Miatas are boring AF and definitely an old man's car or a chicks car. They're incredibly lame.

I know I won't win this argument as you won't change your mind. Not sure where they hurt you, maybe show me on the doll next time we are at an event. For a cheap track car they seem to be rather popular.

RWD BMW's can be had if you are willing to work on them.

Classic Neons were fun to toss around.

The BMW idea is interesting...

I also like the Neon thoughts. I've driven the R/T's back in the day, and they were fun. SRT-4 swap would be even more fun.

Thing looks pretty straight and damn near what I'd want to do. I will say, I'm a little hesitant about the German stuff as I don't have much experience with it...with that in mind, all the cooling system replacements leads me to believe he's been chasing a leak or overheating issue...would be worried about warped/cracked heads that's eating coolant. On a Ford, GM, Chrysler it wouldn't bother me as much...for some reason, on something German, it scares me.
