Rebadge a 2015 Genesis to look like a 2017?

Buy a 2015 Hyundai Genesis in 2018?

I am flirting with the idea of buying a 2015 Hyundai Genesis when 2018 hits. The car reviews on this model are glowing with nobody I have seen saying much of anything bad about the car other than "It's a Hyundai and doesn't have the wow factor of buying a German/Japanese luxury car".

In 2018, Hyundai (cough, cough,) Genesis is going to release a new model of the "Genesis" which, since 2017, is called the Genesis G 80. The prices for used, 2nd generation, Genesi have already dropped from a new price of $40K-$50K+ into the mid/high $20K range for low mileage cars. You can get a 3.8 for mid $20s while the 5.0 Ultimate version is just over $30K. Next year, when Genesis releases the updated version of the G 80, Genesis owners are going to be even more likely to dump their 1-3 y.o. cars to upgrade to the new model. With more Genesi hitting the used car market, I expect prices to drop even more, especially the "Hyundai" 2015/2016s.

So, if the 5.0, 420 hp Ultimate version dips into the $20s, it will be a bargain to find a low mileage, adult owned car that listed over $50K when purchased.

Even more enticing, the 2015-2017 versions are essentially the same car, with very minor changes, even though the 2017s are badged as Genesis G 80s and not Hyundai Genesis. Why not buy the Genesis wing badge, pull off the "H" on the trunk and slap it on? Slap on a G 80 badge where the Genesis badge was and, bam, you have a car that looks like it's a 2017 model. For less than half the price of a new 2017/2018.

Check out the youtube reviews. It's close to 100% of reviewers liking/loving the cars including the long term reviews. They're not quite up to the German/Japanese level but they are much cheaper. My buddy has one and it's a kickass car.

Hyundai added the Genesis brand to copy the other manufacturers' Honda/Acura, Toyota/Lexus, etc. Because the higher end brand is still so new, depreciation is still hitting them as hard as Hyundai is hit. Most people haven't realized yet that the Genesis is a pretty good car and a bargain for the money.

Ha Ha! I thought so, too. There are better reviews but they didn't pop up on top when I was copying them. Most reviewers were pleasantly surprised by the car with several saying things like "This is a Hyundai?".

The 5.0 gets terrible mileage but reviewers loved the power.

The 3.8 is available with all wheel drive for around the same cost as the rear wheel drive 5.0.

The 5.0 comes mostly with the Ultimate package which has all the bells and whistles.

The 3.8 is around 400 Lbs. lighter on the front end but the 300 hp is just "adequate".

Choices, choices.

BTW, some people are putting superchargers and turbos on these engines, mostly on the coupe but there's no reason they couldn't go on the sedan.

99 pics of the upcoming G80 Sport in the link. 2018 Genesis G80: Now with a Twin-Turbo Sport Trim and Mild Facial Reconstruction – Photos and Info – News – Car and Driver

It will be offered with the 3.3L turbo from the G90.

The most exciting development is the new G80 Sport—painted white in the accompanying photos—which as its name suggests is a more dynamic take on the G80 that includes snarly intakes, more aggressive front and rear bumpers, a mesh grille in place of the regular G80’s slatted piece, a handsome set of 19-inch wheels wearing performance tires, and a subtle lower-body kit. Oh, and Genesis borrowed the sweet 365-hp 3.3-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 from the larger G90 and bolted it into the Sport’s engine bay. We really like this 3.3-liter turbo in the G90; it deftly motivates that larger four-door while making nice noises and transmitting zero bad vibrations to the cabin.

In the smaller G80, the 3.3T has the potential to outgun the range-topping 5.0-liter V-8 engine. The turbo V-6 serves up 365 horsepower and 376 lb-ft of torque (55 horsepower and 7 lb-ft less than the V-8), but if the G80 Sport’s mass falls closer to that of the lighter, 311-hp G80 3.8 than the G80 5.0, it could be quicker than both, particularly if optioned with the HTRAC all-wheel-drive system that is also offered with the other two engines.

More aggressive grill:

Extended review of the 2017 twin turbo G90.

Damn, Hyundai put some nice stuff in this car. Review includes a look at the car on a lift. Huge intercooler, brake ducts, aerodynamic wheels, electronically adjustable real shocks (no air suspension), etc. Reviewer LOVES the 3.3 twin turbo. Says the car reminds him of a BMW. All wheel drive, in sport mode, will allow 90% drive to rear wheels. Reviewer says this is one of the best vehicles he has driven under $150,000. Priced from $68,100-$87,000 . Hyundai is going after the A8, BMW 7 Series market. Note: This is the car formerly called the Equus. Hyundai includes 5 year warranty, maintenance, updates and Sirius subscription all for 5 years. They will come to your home so you can test drive it and will pick it up and drop off a loaner for any service needed. No more waiting or trips to the dealership.

You guys can have it all now. No need to wait.

First watch the lovely Brian Cooley take you through the Equus Ultimate:

And now let's see what this will cost you...

Cars for Sale: Used 2011 Hyundai Equus Ultimate for sale in Vero Beach, FL 32966: Sedan Details - 451919264 - Autotrader

$17,000. $17,000! $17,000 gets you a 420hp V8, 7.1 channel Lexicon sound system, full reclining rear seat, a refrigerator. A fridge! That's one hell of a beater with a heater. I'd never consider one at $70,000 but $17,000? Sign my ass up.

If the Equus wasn't on the other side of the State, I'd go test drive it just to see what it's like. $17K? For a $65K car with less than 50,000 miles? Hyundai is the Rodney Dangerfield of car manufacturers.

"Honey, I'm going out to get a massage. I'll be in the driveway with a cold drink from the fridge..."
