I feel like pulling 5000-5500 really stresses those 5.3s

ive said it a few times now.... gear ratio is key here.

a 4L60e burban with 4.10 gears will pull 5k all day long jussssssssst fine.

6L80e look for at least 3.42's and you'll be okay.

my 4.8L 3.08 geared pickup truck pulled 5k a few times without any issue whatsoever.

it had to work at it, but it did it.

had my truck had 4.10s it would have been a breeze.

5000 is nothing for the 5.3. We pulled a loaded open car trailer that was probably 5500 or more and its likes its not even back there. That was with 1500 suburban.

My truck pulls 5,500 just fine with 3.42's. Like I said earlier a lot of it is the wind resistance. My old 1500 Sierra with 4.10's was great until you were on the highway.

Default What SUV's can haul decent sized travel trailers

Really only basing my opinion one one trip '11 Tahoe pulling 5400 to gingerman and back, highway was completely fine but on way back once I got to stop lights water and trans temp crept way up there and ended up warping the rotors. It was uhaul 2k# trailer with those momentum trailer brakes plus my 3400# car

yeah. you need dedicated electric trailer brakes for something like that. not surge.

what gear ratio was your tahoe

Doubt 4.10 so 3.73 is more common?

probably not, most 6-speed trucks, like yours was probably was 3.23 or 3.42. typically it seems like 3.23 is the case iirc.

i dont think you could get 6 speed with 4.10s from the factory but may be mistaken... @Outlaw

Saw a guy in a new Yukon getting man-handled by his 20'-ish foot trailer on the way home from WI yesterday. It was pushing him all over the road. He looked almost paniced as we ripped past him at my standard 81mph cruise speed.

looks like 2011 didn't have optional gear ratios for tahoes.

3.42 is what you got.

http://assets.cobaltnitra.com/teams/...146efa6b30.pdf

that setup was rated for 8200lbs though from the factory.

Pulled my 17 foot camper with my Volvo XC90, it comes in at about 3750 w/o load. It's rated to 5500, certainly wouldn't want to try it for too long though. Load Balancing hitch made a huge difference as well, it works well enough for the flats. Under NO circumstances get a T5/T6, not sure if they changed gear boxes towards the end of the production run but they were 4T60E based. Even without towing they've got a really crappy reputation for durability. The V8s come with an Aisin 6 speed. I think I got 12ish towing when usually I get 19ish highway and 16ish city. Just food for thought. Never tracked it too heavily though.

We got an Escalade ESV off the inlaws for a good deal, it's rated over 7K (I think 73-7500ish) and it has a 6.0/65E in it. Have as of yet to tow with it however. I will say they come standard with 3.73s and the 6.0 in the AWD version which is rated higher than the RWD.

Surprised, I looked it up when verifying I wasn't exceeding and which ball to get etc, and max was like 5500-5800 I remember.

that may have been the hitches maximum.

GM doesn't always equip it's vehicles with hitches that match the max tow capacity of the vehicle. because GM

You're correct. I think you could do 3.73's but I'm not sure. I know my 2011 Sierra with the 5.3/6-speed had 3.42's and pulled a 6,500# boat dry without fuel and gear on a steel trailer like it was nothing.

Before we had the weight distribution bars for our 28' trailer, we loaded it to heavy in the back and it got pretty scary. We were going to GLD and the trailer decided it wanted to swing us around. We swung about a lane on each side.

Proper loading and WD bars fixed all those issues. Lesson learned.

yeah this poor guy was all over the road. He must have had weight loaded incorrectly because there was no wind to speak of out there.

yep shit like Tongue height and distribution of weight are really important to towing. Also, don't forget to see if it has a brake controller and factor in when purchasing. We have a wireless for ours that's nice b/c you just transfer it from vehicle to vehicle.

If you are talking about towing a camper with this, that is a lot of surface area to catch wind resistance. It won't be comparable with a boat or open trailer. How far do you plan on towing said camper?
