Do you remember your first actual street race?

Grabbed the idea from another site, surprised it never popped up here.

We've all done it at some point...whether its set up, a random meeting on the highway or around town....what was yours?

I think my actual street race (and for money no less) was with my first GTP. I raced a 03/04 Cobra and only lost by maybe a fender. Was full prep and everything.

The thing I remember most wasnt the loss but was how those with us were all shocked that a grand prix kept up

Spivitz 01-02-2017 05:12 PM

Back in 1988, my 1976 Nova Shark, 305 two barrel of hair raising 165hp( maybe)
I lost to another Nova with a 350.

Jdiding 01-02-2017 05:17 PM

about 2004 I had my purple 3rd gen it was way to much motor for the chassis to hook , raced a ls1 Camaro got beat but only by a tiny bit I was running him down on the big end

stock-t-bird 01-02-2017 05:30 PM

1982,junior year HS...my 1967 Chevelle vs 1973 Challenger 340..Chevelle was a sbc w/4:10 gear..4-speed bolt ons..fkr ran well,3rd gear ran hard...equal race for 13 sec cars back then
needed some tires...high school kid working at White Castle..did my best :bigthumb:

CTC DEEZUL 01-02-2017 05:56 PM

Jr year HS 05. First iroc. Built the engine bare block up with gramps. raced my gfs brothers 82 LT1 swapped z28.

No prepping, nothing just bald dry rotted tires. He took me by a car or two, all I was doing was spinning. End of the season came and we tore it down and found chipped skirts and cooked bearings. Then found out the water pump was for a serp belt but I ran a V. I never knew, I didn't even have gauges...

1quick 01-02-2017 06:01 PM

Probably a month after I got my first car 1975 Malibu 2 door vs a rs 305 third gen camaro, I got beat by a couple car lengths, stock 2 barrel 350 for the loss I even had the air cleaner lid flipped for that extra hp or two lol

stock-t-bird 01-02-2017 06:06 PM

air cleaner lid flipped over for that BBHHHAAAA & sound for extra hp...thanks for the memory man

DanJoy 01-02-2017 07:06 PM

I don't remember first. I know I used to look for stockish 2V mustangs in my pulley, rocker's and header Bonneville . Got some guy good on Orchard by Randall one night.

Stink Star Productions 01-02-2017 07:16 PM

Just stoplight racing I'm not sure what was my first, but cruising rt14 in the summer of 2000 I remember a stoplight race in my 86 trans am vs a 95/96 competition yellow C4, it straight smoked the shit out of me and I vowed one day to get one myself- and of course I did.

As far as a real setup race with somebody I didn't know... I'm pretty sure it was out on union Rd in the Huntley backroads in my Vette vs some DSM. I promised not to spray. I lied. He never saw it coming

SleeperLS 01-02-2017 07:19 PM

First one was a rollrace with a stock c5 vette in my Monte when I first swapped it. Pretty much a tie, but I remember my adrenaline rush was so intense my legs felt weak.

daturbosix 01-02-2017 07:44 PM

2000-ish?
my dads bolt on 87 GN vs a cammed 97/98 LSC mark8 in the city at some bullshit hangout everyone was at near 94 and elston or cicero.

showed up there with my old man and me driving(had no license), asked to talk to the owner of the fastest car there and the guy with the mark8 came forward, i won 3 times then as i wasspotting im out for the 4th race, the cops came, then we booked it out of there..

good times. lol many many more cool stories from that point on....

LoveSpank 01-02-2017 08:53 PM

Great topic. Answer is yes I remember my first street race like it was yesterday. I was in my mostly stock 2000 civic SI and was against a Integra. I played catch up the entire race but came out victorious. The adrenaline was pumping. Man I miss those days. @Turk I think I was in ur SS for your first street race as well.

Turk 01-02-2017 09:28 PM

My first street race was actually in a 2000 3.8 Camaro. Beat Jon's 3.4 and Trents V6 Mustang.

Turk 01-02-2017 09:29 PM

I think the first race I had in the SS was against Trent's Slowbra. You were there for that one, in your Intrepid! :)

Flyn 01-02-2017 09:56 PM

Hundreds of races and I don't remember the first. It had to be with my '69 Torino because that was my first car. I probably lost. Three speed on the tree and a 302. LOL!

My first track race was with my '86 IROC. Got a trophy that night but I don't remember the details. Didn't take first, I know that.

Sprayin 01-02-2017 10:53 PM

First ever street race was a stop light race against my brother in his Caddy in late 2003. I was 15 and had just bought an 83 Mustang Vert. 5.0 5-speed. I had no idea how to drive the car and I lost to a 16 second Caddy

The night after that we took the car up to the Taco Bell in Gurnee (back when people actually used to meet up up North.) I proceeded to get landed on by everything in the parking lot. Started with a blown Camry, then an SRT4, then a Civic. Pretty sure they were all fun runs back then, I can't remember if there was $ involved. We had been taking my Bros car out for over a year so we were familiar with the people. Think they just wanted to clown on me in my first car

I really miss that car though. I essentially gave it away.

Dan00Hawk 01-02-2017 10:59 PM

Back in HS around 1989, I had an 86 Integra at the end of my sophomore year right after I turned 16. A cute senior girl that I used to carpool with had a red 1980 Datsun 280Z. She and her boyfriend were insistent that because her car had a V6, that it would be faster than my 4 cylinder. Her boyfriend drove her car for her, and we lined up on Sullivan near Orchard Rd in Aurora. Both cars were automatic and barely capable of chirping the tires LOL. I didn't win the girl, but I did win the race by a few carlengths. :)

Gav'sPurpleZ 01-02-2017 11:05 PM

1994 Cutlass Supreme 3.1 4dr ( me ) vs a friend's friend in a ford ranger ( early 90s )
this happened around 2000 or 2001.
East river rd headed south towards Higgins.

I won :fy:

Guess who's back 01-02-2017 11:34 PM

First Street race with a driver's license or first Street race in general? I used to street race bmx bikes or w/e bike we could get our hands on when were kids. Broke by arm at the finish line once too. Came in 2nd on my sisters girls bike to a 16 speed i was keeping up with. Put my arms up at the finish to celebrate and hit the pedal brake on mistake and went down hard. About 11-12 years old.

Now with a car and having a DL, was in my first car a 95 Chevy Lumina. Forget what i raced but I'd race anything and everything off traffic lights. Always been racing aa far as i can remember.

GLADIATOR 01-03-2017 01:56 AM

MY first legit drag race was in Mexico. Not the disclaimer "Mexico", the real Mexico, Nuevo Laredo Tamaulipas Mexico. Just across the border from Laredo TX.

I would visit my cousins in Laredo during the summer ever since I was a kid. As I got older I would drive down there, stay a couple of weeks, party like hell with my cousins, and live like a king. Life was good back then. I was 21 years old, single, building my mini-monster truck "Gladiator", I had an 86 GXXR, a Dodge station wagon with a slant six for beater duties. But my baby was a 68 RS/SS Camaro. Red, Rally sport wheels, and hide away headlights. 327 SBC with 11:1 compression, 650 Holley with mechanical secondaries, Turbo 400, 12 bolt with 4.10 gears. Nice thumpin cam with dual exhaust...ohhhh yeah. It wasn't intended for racing...just a cool car to cruise the scene with. So my buddy and I decide to drive the 68 Camaro to Laredo. It's 1500 miles each way. The drive in itself was an adventure I will never forget and a story for another time since this is about my first drag race. All the way down, at every gas station, people would approach me and wanted to race me. I just wanted to get to Laredo and start having fun.

Once we arrived, we did the usual...party, eat, go to the clubs. On Sundays all the "kids" would cruise this certain boulevard. Mostly driving their parents cars/trucks. Some rich kids with nice cars. Not really a hot rod scene. Laredo was a small town, and the word was out that there was a red hot rod from Chicago roaming the streets. One of my cousins acquaintances had a bumble bee 70-73 Camaro on Cragars. Sounded nice and he thought he was the fastest car at the boulevard. He was talking crap to us all week. I had no intention on racing him.

Sunday comes, we are cruising the boulevard hung over like zombies drinking bloody marys and the bumble bee camaro pulls up next to us. He starts revvin his motor and doing little mini launches next to us. He was talking trash to me and my copilot in front of all the honeys. Enough was enough....

The boulevard was a 4 lane road. Two lanes going each way in the middle. On the sides of the boulevard were service roads on each side where the hoochies would park and tease the guys. There were speed bumps about every 50 feet so you couldn't go fast on the actual boulevard but after the last speed bump....it was a straight road into the dessert. We agreed at the last speed bump....it was "ON"!!! We had about 20 cars behind us as we crawled. People were lining the boulevard. At the last speed bump, I dropped it into first, slammed the gas....when the mechanical secondaries in the holley opened up the 68 launched hard. The Camaro was easily doing 120 mph and destroyed the bumble bee. When we returned to the boulevard, my buddy and my cousin were hangin out the windows screaming and yelling. The crowd was cheering us and giving us thumbs up!! We were the Kings of the Boulevard!! We parked the 68 and next thing you know we got a crowd around us. It was really cool that night. We sat around drinking beers and BSn with everybody. I wish I would have never sold that 68 RS/SS. It was the one that got away....

98GrandPrixIraqVet 01-03-2017 02:36 AM

First car Cadillac Eldorado vs a monte carlo. Some kid in my class thought he could beat my "grandpa" car  pos 1994 Z34 monte didnt stand a chance against the 300hp northstar.

God i miss that car :tear: white with blue leather absolute tank in the winter too.

Turbocharged400sbc 01-03-2017 02:57 AM

Do I remember my first street race. Yes I do and sort of don't.
My first street race was on a three wheeler and I got hit by a brown Buick Roadmaster wagon. I do remember the iodine baths in the hospital afterwards

lastls1 01-03-2017 07:42 AM

First real race was my nitrous Gto vs a heavily modified cobalt SS from a roll on the hwy.

We thought we were hot shit back then. Had cop spotters way in front of us and way behind us for the race.

Sadly the race ended with my clutch getting sucked to the floor and his cobalt having a huge backfire through the intake. Lol

nytebyte 01-03-2017 08:46 AM

First drag race I can remember: I was in a 1985 BMW 325i, straight 6 and around 180 HP. I had a friend who bought a brand new 1986 IROC and wanted to race.

I was behind him about 2 cars as we turned onto the main highway and he just took off. Not a very fair start to the race, but I made up the ground and beat him by half a car length in the end.

That little bimmer was quick.

First race in the 03 Cobra (stock) was against a 350Z. Needless to say, by the top of 2nd gear I was ahead by bus lengths.

Bub 01-03-2017 10:19 AM

I was an amateur using Nitrous Oxide in my Eclipse trying to take down a red RX-7, I almost had him but Thank God I didn't blow myself to pieces. Ended up blowing the welds on the intake and frying the piston rings.

BADAZZTEALCOBRA 01-03-2017 10:25 AM

First time was in my 1989 Escort GT against a buddies Plymouth Laser Turbo....

Last time I street raced was more "fucking around" with my Cobra against a buddies Z28... Got caught flying down Schaumburg Road (luckily the officer didnt have any radar or anything on us) but he caught up to use a few lights down and after seeing the cars on flat beds and paying all the lawyer BS that was the last time.

cap42 01-03-2017 10:40 AM

Not sure if it was my first as I had a few cars before then but this is the first street race I remember.

1995-ish with my 70 buick skylark, it had a sbc 350 296 cam worked heads and 850 dbl pumper holley running through a turbo400 and 12 bolt with 3:55 gears. I used to take this car out to 4 corners and Franks looking for street races. I mainly picked on 5.0 foxes and camaro's if they were stock I never had an issue.

I lined up this race with a SHO at 4 corners thinking it's a 6 and I could take him easily, I was so cocky I never asked him to pop his hood. I think the race was for $200. Needless to say I never lived it down from my buddy who rode out there with me on how this SHO walked me by a few cars, to this day I still never knew what that guy was running.

Blownbyyou 01-03-2017 02:13 PM

My first race....

I was in my 91 lumina 3.1 that had a horrible stumbling issue off idle. I mean you would literally press the gas too hard and bam the car would shut off. To make matters worse the starter needed shims in the worse kind of way so I could never "hide" the car shutting off.

Well my friend in his moms 96 caravan wanted to race, so I thought there is no way I am loosing to this fucking mini van, so we come up to a light that's red and decided its go time. As the other light is turning red I am brake torquing to around 2,500 rpm, as soon as the light turns green I hammer it and I hear a squeech of the tires and then boom the motor dies, I instantaneously restart and try to catch him but it wasn't worth it, I had lost.... My passenger later stated he almost didn't know I had to restart, thats' how fast I was lol.

However my favorite race was when I was like 17 or 18 years old....

Cars:
Him:
1996 dodge ram pace truck, 5.9 with forged internals, headers, intake, cam, quasi built trans, and 4.11 gears... Then they topped it off with a powerdyne blower (no gears, runs via a belt) so he couldn't boost over like 5 psi it was quite sad...

Me: 1969 Ford Torino 428 Cobra Jet with a 4 speed, recently restored by my old man and myself. Nothing major, hell if I remember correctly it had 3.2x gears and no posi lol... Oh it did have dumps which sounded awesome!

So I don't know what prompted the race, other than they were two of the faster cars at school and we were all kind of friends so we went down to i believe the stockyards at like 9 pm (didn't want alot of people there). So there we were lined up, all I remember is looking at the a column mounted tach at about 4k, then the arms dropping of the flagger....

As you can imagine right off the line all I do is spin the tires, badly..... so finally I grab traction in second and slowly pull on him, slam 3rd as hard as I could. I was slowly starting to reel him in but unfortunately we ran out of real estate....

The best was when we came back to the start line we had about 10 people with us who were wondering who won because there was sooooo much smoke...

I later went to my buddies house that night and moved the right rear tire to the left front to hide the fact that the car did a massive smokey (my dad was a manager of a firestone at the time so he looked at that stuff). He ended up replacing the left front tire a month later and did an alighment lol!

lastls1 01-03-2017 02:46 PM

lol I used to do 1 tire fires in my moms Honda Odyssey. God how did women ever talk to any of us lol

Mook 01-03-2017 02:48 PM

I used to race @IDAFC21 a lot in my 3rd gen...so I guess those might have been my first real races but two 16 second cars racing to wendys doesnt really count.

Fish 01-04-2017 01:00 AM

I did a few funzie races in HS in the late 90s with my 3.1 STE Grand Prix. Probably my first "races".

Pressure Ratio 01-04-2017 11:27 AM

Back in the mid 90's I built a 1983 Capri. It had a rebuilt 302 with Winsor SR heads, large solid roller cam, single plane intake, 750 double pumper, 9:1 compression :picard: , t5 trans, 25x8 cheater slicks, and 4:30 ring and pinion out back. Back when my engine builder was under the "bigger is better" logic. All but that low compression killing the combo. lol

Thinking it would like spay we took a NOS cheater system pilled for a 300 shot and put it on my car. We took the car to a local spot and threw a new device called a Vericom on the windshield. It was like the first V box available. I had driven the car to a high 13 on a street tire at the Grove at that point. I launched the car and it left harder than anything I had felt. The steering got light so I think it pulled the wheels. But the tach climbed soo fast by the time it was ready to shift I wasn't ready. So it was a slow 1-2 shift. Same with the 2-3 & 3-4 shift. I was catching my breath between shifts. Went like 11.8 @ 125 or so according to the Vericom.

A couple weeks later we are at 4 corners and a guy comes up to my buddy with a 1969 Riviera trying to get him to race his 1965 Impala. We looked at the car and it looked very familiar. It looked a lot like Nick Scavos car. For you who don't know about that car, it was a big inch BBC that went 8's @ 155 at the time. But looked stock. It even had a custom column shifter that was a ratchet shifter. We walked away to think about the race. Well, a guy came up and confirmed it was a twin to Nicks car but toned down to be a better street car. His brother's car if I remember correctly. Rod's car was like a 11.9 at the time on it's best day. Which was damn quick for a boat of a car back then. But we figured it wouldn't be enough for the Impala. So Rod convinces me to go behind the Sears and throw the Cheater kit back on my car. We had some tools and my car still had all the wiring on it from a few weeks earlier. The car also had a 26x10 bias ply street tire on it by this time. So we figured with the bigger tire and me hitting the shifts better and quicker that I would be at least a mid to low 11. So we went and installed the cheater kit

We go back and the Impala is gone. But a guy with a Mopar comes over and wants to race. So they threw my car at him. The Mopar sounded healthy as fuck. It was a BB Mopar that also had spray on it.

So we go race. I was so nervous! We line up and I got the hit. I left, the car seemed to have lifted the tires a little and I was off. I was better prepared to hit the shifts this time at least. I made good gear changes and now was along for the ride in 4th gear. I was ahead of him by about a car. Until I was bouncing off the rev limiter! AGGGH! I lifted before the finish line and he came around me. He won by about a fender. I was so pissed! When we got back to the spot a few people told us the kid's dad has a few 9 & 10 second Mopars. And they assumed that this car was probably a solid low 11 high / 10-second car. All in all, it was something an adrenaline rush, made me extremely nervous, and I could tell why it was so addicting. haha

Here is a cool video about Nick Scavos car. It starts about 44 seconds into the video.

Raced some poor kid from a stoplight in a 94 S10 Blazer with my 50 hp K&N filter.

pulled up next to two kids about to race each other from a stoplight. it was a late 90s jetta vs a Sentra SE-R. i pulled up next to them and revved my motor lol. all left at green only to pass a cop a bit of a ways up with the sentra in front of me and the jetta behind. Sentra was the only one he pulled over and I got away spot free that night.

I grew up in The Windings right off Empire back in the 80's. Swanberg was always fun to rip down with only 1 farmhouse to worry about (back then).
