Shit is about to get rurrrrrl up in here. I feel like Volvo has just about the best interiors in the business right now, just behind Audi. And this is such a good marriage too because Volvo's new cars are also going to a limited button design that relies heavily on a touchscreen for most of the car's functions. So this dude isn't going to skip a beat.

For now, enjoy the Volvo interior porn.

Tesla poaches Volvo’s ‘Head of Interior Engineering’ to improve its interior quality

Tesla managed to hire a top engineering talent from the Swedish automaker Volvo. Electrek has learned that Anders Bell, Senior Director of Engineering at Volvo and the automaker’s ‘Head of Interior Engineering’ is joining Tesla in an equivalent role this month.

The engineer confirmed the move on his LinkedIn profile over the weekend.

After spending his entire career at Volvo and leading all interior engineering from concept development & design to launch for the past two years, he will be moving from Sweden to California to join Tesla.

Prior to his executive role overseeing all interior operations, Bell led several engineering programs at Volvo ever since joining the automaker fresh out of engineering school in 1998, according to his LinkedIn profile.

He was in charge of the programs to create the SPA cross carline front seat system that was introduced in the Volvo XC90 2015 and the interior of the Volvo S60L 2015:

Before becoming head of all interiors engineering at Volvo, he did an almost 4-year stint in China after Geely bought the company from Ford.

In China, he built up the Interior and Climate engineering department of the new ‘Volvo Cars China’ and he oversaw the launch of the Volvo XC60:

Twilight Bronze, Exterior, Front, Side Production of the Volvo S60L and XC60 at the plant in Chengdu, China Production of the Volvo S60L and XC60 at the plant in Chengdu, China
At Tesla, he will have his work cut out for him. Rave reviews and awards aside, one of the main complaints about Tesla’s vehicles is that the interior is not on par with other luxury vehicles.

It will be interesting to see what Bell can do about that and what he can do with the most puzzling interior of all, the Tesla Model 3’s interior.

I don't know internets.

That's a good snag. We just sold our XC90 after 11 months of testing and 22,000 miles. Beautiful interior.

How did you guys like it otherwise?

The touchscreen slowed down over the year and no updates were released to freshen it up. At startup, you couldn't activate the heated seats or backup camera as the screen booted up. So many controls are on-scren only so they were locked out until the screen booted. Otherwise, it was great. Needed brakes at 20,000 miles, but they were covered by a TSB, and oil changes were covered by the complimentary service plan.

I don't know how they would repeat that problem after the last XC90's glaring issues with the backup camera. The display was motorized and would slide up out of the dashboard when you put the car in reverse but it moved so slowly that you'd have to wait like 10 seconds before you could use it.

I still don't know how Tesla has it so that the center screen is instantly on every time you get into the car. It's like voodoo but I like it.

I hate that, give me buttons.

I would have said the same a couple years ago but a good touchscreen makes it a non-issue and in fact makes many things easier. I honestly can't think of a function that I miss having a button for. I'm sure there is one but the point is the system is good enough where I'm not clamoring for tactile feedback at all times.

Motor Trend tested it at 2.34 seconds with a 1 foot rollout.

I don't get motion sick at all but foot to the floor acceleration on my car is offensive and I have the embarrassingly slow 3.1 second 0-60 Insane mode car. Imagine one of those roller coasters that has the magnetic launch. Now imagine the pimple-faced kid running it found the thrust knob and wanted to see what would happen if he turned it all the way up. It's like that.

There's a momentary feeling of nausea, followed by surprise. Every time: surprise. Like how can it do that? How can it keep doing that? Back in my day the 220hp Taurus SHO was cutting edge and we couldn't keep transmissions together on 300hp cars and here's this fucking space ship, reliably launching you into orbit on demand. How far we've come in just 10 years.
