Preserving surface rust/paint/patina/junk

So my car has had a paint job at some point in its life (probably many many years ago) and said paint has flaked off in some spots due to weather. It's developed surface rust where the paint has gone.

I was looking to I guess stop it but not necessarily sand it down and prime it. In the future it'll get actual paint but for now I'm looking to preserve its weathered look.

Should I go with something like wd40 and a rag, wax, motor oil, etc? Scotch bright it first?

I saw talks of boiled linseed oil which I know is an old trick for steel bike frame tubes. Just spray it inside the tubes to keep from rusting.

I replied but sprint sucks and it wouldn't go though apparently...

honestly i would just scuff it and rattle can primer or clear - not much to do unless you want to repair it correctly

I'd just satin clear it, it'll preserve the "flat" rusted look if that's what you're going for. If all you want to do is stop the rust then scuff, scotch brite and use a rust stopping primer.
