I have an Olds 455/TH350 in my 85 Cutlass. I have settled upon going with this Ford 9" rear setup 9" Ford Complete Rearend GM G-Body 78-87. I am currently floating between going with a 3.50 and a 3.70. This is primarily a street cruiser that will see the occasional track visit. Given this and the torque of the 455, I am thinking that the 3.50 might be the best all around choice for me. Any suggestions/input regarding my gear ratio selection is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

i'd do the 3.70 and if it's a bit much go to a taller tire

but i have no idea really too.

That is not a terrible idea. I'd have to make sure a bigger tire would fit with no issues.

What gear is currently in the car? How do you like it? Too much, too little?

The car currently has the stock 7.5" 10 bolt with a 2.13 gear. I like it very little. I have no problem breaking the rear end loose, but the car feels very slow for what it is.

th350 295/50/15 and 3.50 gear is 2873rpm at 65 mph

3.70 gear is 3037, a difference of 164 rpm.

go with the 3.70. it's not that nuts.

if you were contemplating a 4.10 or even a 4.56 or something id be hesitant but plenty of people run around with 3.7x's and love them.

my dad just went to a 3.73 in his 62 impala/th350 and loves it

My advice is use this and figure out what's sane for your purposes.

What are you doing with the car? Local only or highway miles? For local only 3.73s or 3.50s are probably a bit steep. Something to keep in mind is it's NOT a 350. With 455 CID you're not going to be spinning this up like crazy nor will you need to.

My advice is throw it in "2nd" and see how you like it. The reason for this is as below:

1.52 (TH-350 2nd gear)*2.13=3.2376
1 (TH-350 3rd gear)*3.23=3.23

This means that if you are okay with the RPM in 2nd with your current setup it will be like third with 3.23s. If you are okay with more highway RPM you can add more gear, or drop down to say 3.0s if you're not.

With the 9" the way it is you MIGHT consider a second third member with some highway gears in it. Doesn't have to be anything special really since you won't beat on it. Depends on where you go and how much going you do.

BTW One of the guys on the thirdgen.org board may want your 2.13s if you sell em later on. He was looking for a set.

Thank you for the feedback and advice everyone. At this point, I believe I am leaning towards being a sally and going with the 3.50.

Can you please point me in the direction of the 2.13 seeker?

He goes by the handle "Project89" on thirdgen.org. I told him you had a set.
