5.3 School Me

Not super familiar with this engine but everytime in a discussion with a carguy about my Camaro a 5.3 swap comes up. Im probably gonna sell it for extra cash to put towards a 3rd gen trans am but whats up with the 5.3? Is it super cheap? What vehicles do they come in? Also wondering if it would be difficult to put into a 3rd gen?

5.3 comes in gm trucks from 1999-now. You can find complete motors for like $400 at junkyard.

And you can take the truck manifolds, flip them (so they face forward) and run a single turbo. Its an epic budget turbo build.

I believe this is the case with the 5.3's, but if you get an 04-06 5.3 they have ls2 style rods and Pistons which are much more durable but still a genIII motor.. Best way to tell if it's got the newer rods is if the exhaust manifold bolts are 13mm instead of 10mm. This is definitely the case with 6.0 lq4's

Great little engines, very cheap, and easily found. My 4.8 handled big power in my turbo camaro for 2 years and now will be used in my mustang for a nitrous combo until it blows (it probably wont) lol.

Perfect throw away engines for boost applications. Just a little LS 327ci Iron block... They take a beating and if you blow them, pull them out and scrap them and pick up another for dirt cheap...

Its cheap dude. CHEAP... Fuck N/A... Although you can make some good power with a LS6 intake, Some 243 heads and a Cam....

Not really because of the cubic inch. But they love power adders. I am expecting 330-340rwhp out of my 4.8 on motor. With a 5.3 you can make 350+rwhp without anything too crazy.

Yeah its not too bad. If you find a 5.3 you will make more than 350 with a decent cam.

If you want big power cheap, Toss in a 5.3 LM7 and boost.
If you want More power N/A then the LM7 H/C/I cheap, Toss in a 5.3 LS4 and Cam "Aluminum Block, 10:1.1 CR" More responsive then the LM7 to Cam/Boltons do to higher compression.
If you want more power growth N/A then all above, Find a used LS1 from a camaro/TA... 01+ used a LS6 block/LS6 intake which is even better.

He would want the l33 aluminum 5.3. The ls4 has a v6 bellhousing bolt pattern.
