When I took it this year they preached about using the kill switch every time.

Using both the kill switch and the key adds an unnecessary step. It also increases the risk you will forget to turn off/remove key and end up with a dead battery or stolen bike. Turning the bike off using the key only means you have one hand movement to both turn off and remove the key.

Not a good idea IMO. In the unfortunate event of an emergency you're not going to want to take one hand off the handlebars.

If you're in the habit of taking your hand off the handle bar and turning the key to the off position to shut off the bike during normal operation. Guess what you'll do to shut off the bike in a emergency?

You should be in the habit of using the kill switch that way if/when there is an emergency, muscle memory will do its job.

On my old bike I always used the kill switch as it was a lot quicker. The key was in an awkward place under my left leg on the side of the bike. I'd forget the key every now and then but luckily never killed the battery or had someone ride away with it.

Always key, was told years ago that using the kill switch was bad. No idea if it was or not but got in the habit of using the key. However in emergency situations I've used the kill switch.
